Zimbra: Takes Web E-mail Offline

Have you ever wanted to get your webmail on your desktop? Yahoo’s Zimbra Desktop does just that. Zimbra does lot more with web-based access to your Gmail, Yahoo or even Exchange mail. As a desktop application that even works offline.

The E-mail software company Zimbra released an early version of Zimbra Desktop on Sunday. Web-based alternative to existing mail server clients as Microsoft Exchange and outlook, the company has built an open source. Zibraues Ajax is a Web development method that runs across browsers and operating system. Zimbra Desktop requires users to download software that will synchronize with a Zimbra server. Not only does Zimbra offer to get your Yahoo mail but also a wide range of other services including your ISP.

The Apache Derby database acts as a local e-mail store in this download. This is what is claimed by Sathish Dharmraj, the CEO of the company. He even said that the future versions will not require users to the manual downloads.

The company has released the alpha version now at present. It will release it beta version in this summer. This version will work with POP and IMAP e-calendaring server. Offline capabilities will be released in 5.0 product of the company. The product is supposed to be exhibited by the CEO of the company Dharmraj in San Diego at O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, starting on Monday.

Dharmraj said, “All this innovation has been happening on the Web side (with browsers and Web services), and we want to bring innovation to the desktop as well.” More Web development technology that bridges the desktop with the Web is starting come out. There is another company’s new product version release as well. Adobe Systems earlier this month liberated an alpha version of Apollo. Apollo allows people to write Web applications that can run on desktop machines.

Joyent detailed Slingshot is an online collaboration software company. This software levels developers to convert Web applications written using Ruby on Rails to hybrid online and offline applications. Well, we can hope that all these new versions of software will only enhance and help the web users to the fullest.
